Happy Birthday Mick Taylor: Performing Live With The Rolling Stones

Spread the love

Former The Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor celebrates his birthday today. Taylor was born on January 17, 1949 in Welwyn Garden City, England. Less than 20 years later the guitarist would get his start playing with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1967. In 1969, Taylor’s playing would capture the ears of another group of blues enthusiasts, The Rolling Stones.

The Stones parted ways with founding multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones in June 1969. John Mayall and Stones session and touring keyboardist Ian Stewart suggested Taylor as a replacement. Taylor joined the band in the studio and laid down guitar for “Country Honk” and “Live With Me” for the 1969 album Let It Bleed and also performed on the Stones classic “Honk Tonk Women.” Taylor’s first live appearance with The Rolling Stones at age 20 came in front of a quarter million people at the band’s July 5, 1969 concert in London’s Hyde Park, which became a tribute to Brian Jones who died tragically in a swimming pool accident just a few days before.

Video of “I’m Free” from Hyde Park kicks off JamBase’s Sunday Cinema live video compilation of Mick Taylor’s time with The Rolling Stones which lasted until 1974 and saw the guitarist playing on some of the band’s landmark records like Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St. and Goats Head Soup. The video list also features a 1971 performance of Sticky Fingers’ “Dead Flowers,” a 1972 live version of Exile’s “All Down The Line” and more.

In 2013, Taylor reunited with the band for guest appearances as part of the Stones’ 50 & Counting Tour celebrating the legendary rockers’ 50th anniversary. A pair of clips featuring Mick Taylor joining his old band from that tour end the list.
