The String Cheese Incident shared a quarantine syle video honoring Tony Rice. SCI selected Rice’s version of “Old Train” to pay tribute to the late great bluegrass guitarist.
Herb Pedersen and Nikki Pedersen originally penned “Old Train.” Rice included the tune as the opening track on his 1979 album, Manzanita.
The String Cheese Incident guitarist Bill Nershi recommended Manzanita and offered some thoughts on Rice in the notes accompanying SCI’s video of “Old Train.” Read Billy’s words below:
Tony Rice’s guitar playing shaped a generation of musicians. His impeccable tone, taste and timing were unmatched and highly regarded by players and listeners alike. We are very fortunate to have so many great recordings of his life’s work. If you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing him perform, check out The Tony Rice Unit and David Grisman Quintet albums. I recommend you start with the album ‘Manzanita.’ We’ll never forget you Tony! – Bill Nershi
