Legendary and highly influential French electronic duo Daft Punk recently announced their retirement after nearly 30 years. Famous for rejecting fame, Daft Punk consisted of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter who concealed their identity by wearing elaborate robot helmets.

The band released four albums over the course of their three-decade career, beginning with their 1997 debut, Homework, and culminating with the wildly successful 2013 LP, Random Access Memories, which contained the ubiquitous hit, “Get Lucky,” featuring Pharrell Williams and won the duo five Grammys. Daft Punk was also highly collaborative, often working with other artists, more recently nabbing their first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper with their work on The Weeknd‘s “Starboy.”

Daft Punk’s combination of funk and electronic elements — like the talkbox — characterized their sound and also made them popular with jam artists who were no strangers to mashing up the genres themselves. To honor Daft Punk, JamBase takes a look at five live covers of the lauded electronic duo for this edition of Sunday Cinema.

First up is Dopapod doing “Robot Rock” from Daft Punk’s 2005 album, Human Afterall. Dopapod covered the song on December 30, 2016 at the Madison Theatre in Covington, Kentucky ahead of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2.”

The Infamous Stringdusters — Get Lucky | October 27, 2017

Just before Halloween on October 27, 2017 at Denver’s Ogden Theatre, The Infamous Stringdusters delivered a cover of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” with some members decked out in the duo’s iconic robot helmets. The upbeat tune certainly lends itself well to a bluegrass format.

Another jam act known for mashing up genres (and songs) is Umphrey’s McGee. On January 21, 2012 during a concert at Best Buy Theater in New York City, UM sandwiched Daft Punk’s “Voyager” between “Intentions Clear” and “White Man’s Moccasins.”
